The Darrieus-Landau instability in fast deflagration and laser ablation

چکیده
Abstract The problem of the Darrieus-Landau instability at a discontinuous deflagration front in a compressible flow is solved. Numerous previous attempts to solve this problem suffered from the deficit of boundary conditions. Here, the required additional boundary condition is derived rigorously taking into account the internal structure of the front. The derived condition implies a constant mass flux at the front; it reduces to the classical Darrieus-Landau condition in the limit of an incompressible flow. It is demonstrated that in general the solution to the problem depends on the type of energy source present in the system. In the common case of a strongly localized source, compression effects make the Darrieus-Landau instability considerably weaker. In particular, the Darrieus-Landau instability growth rate is reduced for laser ablation in comparison with the classical incompressible case. The instability disappears completely in the Chapman-Jouguet regime of ultimately fast deflagration.

The main source of such asymmetry is hydrodynamic instabilities (s...
متن کاملStability of planar flames as gasdynamic discontinuities
The stability of a steadily propagating planar premixed flame has been the subject of numerous studies since Darrieus and Landau showed that in their model flames are unstable to perturbations of any wavelength. Moreover, the instability was shown to persist even for very small wavelengths, i.e. there was no high-wavenumber cutoff of the instability. In addition to the Darrieus–Landau instabili...
متن کاملDirect Numerical Simulations of Type Ia Supernovae Flames I: The Landau-Darrieus Instability
Planar flames are intrinsically unstable in open domains due to the thermal expansion across the burning front—the Landau-Darrieus instability. This instability leads to wrinkling and growth of the flame surface, and corresponding acceleration of the flame, until it is stabilized by cusp formation. We look at the Landau-Darrieus instability for C/O thermonuclear flames at conditions relevant to...

Supernovae of type Ia (SNe Ia) are very important for cosmography. To exclude systematic effects in linking the observed light of distant SNe Ia to the parameters of cosmological models, one has to understand the nature of supernova outbursts and to build accurate algorithms for predicting their emission. We review the recent progress of modeling the propagation of nuclear flame subject to nume...
